Weekend Brew

This week had some interesting articles on AI, CRT TVs, and how new experiences impact your happiness. Also, see my article on iOS Screen Time. Enjoy!

Tech

Fascinating article posted on Gizmodo about the different ways AI can become super intelligent and destroy humanity. Scenarios range from taking human instruction too literally, to AI deciding humans are bad for the Earth. While I think these are all worst-case scenarios, many of those who are way smarter than I think these scenarios are very likely.

Video Games

Wired has a write-up on how the resurgence of retro gaming is driving up demand for CRT TVs. Some believe CRTs provide a better visual experience for retro video games, while others like the nostalgia that goes along with it. CRTs, being an old technology, heavy, and in limited supply are now becoming increasingly expensive on the secondary market.

Psychology

GQ posted a great read about the effects new experiences have on mental health. New experiences tend to increase our happiness and make time pass by slower. Lots of consideration here when you think about our time spent during the pandemic and how to manage your mental health moving forward to give yourself experiences that make you happy.

Miscellany

  • Cruella Is Gaslight, Gatekeep, Girlboss in Movie Form – Gizmodo has a great summary of the upcoming Disney movie, Cruella. I enjoyed Maleficent, and I am looking forward to how the writers re-imagine this villain as well.
  • Are Crypto ETFs Coming? – Morningstar discusses the potential reasons investors would want ETFs on Crypto and if we can expect them to come to the US, including if the SEC would even allow it.
